Bus Tour: African American Civil Rights Public History Trail in Prince George's County, Maryland
On this comfortable bus tour to historic Laurel, Maryland, attendees will learn about the Civil Rights Movement in Prince George’s County from project historians and those that lived it. The first stop in Laurel will offer restrooms, water, and snacks before hearing about the collaborative public history project – the Prince George’s County Civil Rights Trail and a historic marker at the site of the formerly segregated public pool. The tour will then continue across the street at the Laurel Museum with a tour of its current exhibits and programs. Participants will re-board the bus for a 5-minute drive to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, cornerstone of The Grove, the historically Black neighborhood in Old Town Laurel and location of a new historic marker. In the sanctuary, we will hear from congregants that participated in the March on Washington. Questions and conversations will be fueled by Mrs. Mildred Awkward famous cold pound cake. The bus will re-board to return attendees to the hotel. Some walking, standing, and stairs will take place throughout the tour and restrooms are available at all stops.
