Bus Tour: Environmental Heritage and Interpretation

In addition to being home to one of the country’s oldest observatories, Montgomery County has major connections to environmentalist Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring), naturalist Roger Tory Peterson (author of several well-known naturalist field guides), and the Audubon Society. On this four-hour bus tour, visit several museums and heritage sites dedicated to interpreting the “golden age of conservation” and hear about how they are each addressing ongoing global conversations about climate change and the environment. Accessibility note: this tour will include the option to depart the bus and participate in a short, but moderately strenuous hike. Attendees wishing to participate should wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes suitable for rough terrain and clothing appropriate for the outdoors. The hike will not be required and an alternative accessible activity will be available to all. In the case of inclement weather, all attendees will be invited to participate in the alternative activity.

This tour is sponsored by Heritage Montgomery. Lunch will be provided.

Bus tour participants must be registered for the Small Museum Association 2025 Annual Conference. Bus tour registrations for individuals not also registered for the conference will be cancelled and refunded.
