Expanding the knowledge of 18th-century
American maritime culture
The
Steward Colonial Shipyard is the archeologically intact 18th century shipyard
discovered in the Middle Atlantic State. Stephen
Steward was one of the patriot fathers that helped establish our nation, and
his shipyard was a major contributor to the winning of the Was of Independence. George
Washington declared that "the Maryland shipbuilding industry took second place
to no nation." The Shipyard served as Maryland's first naval base and was
the site of the only Revolutionary Was engagement in Anne Arundel County when,
in 1781, the British Navy attacked and burned the Steward Shipyard. If
is this proud heritage that the SCSF is validating with every historical fact
uncovered and every archeological find unearthed. The history of the Shipyard
is being interpreted and researched by the SCSF at its museum in Galesville,
MD.
