Director Search The Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve seeks its first full-time Director to administer, develop and promote a young and lively association as it completes the transition from a private collection to a publicly recognized preservation and education organization. The FAHP is committed to preserving and celebrating the legacy of steam transportation, in the context of the Marshall family setting. Viewing that as a living legacy, FAHP also extends operating knowledge of steam transportation technology by training people in the operation and maintenance of steam-powered automobiles and a 1/8 size live steam railroad. That heritage is shared with the public through on-site public programs and participation at off-site events. The heart of the collection is fourteen operating Stanley steam automobiles, all in running condition. These were assembled by Thomas C. Marshall, Jr., and his father, T. Clarence Marshall (1885 - 1969), who was a Stanley dealer in the early 20th century. A 1916 Rauch and Lang electric car and 1932 and 1937 Packards present the three forms of power competing for dominance at the beginning of the automotive era. The miniature steam railroad was constructed by the Marshalls and carries passengers. Auburn Heights is the home constructed by Israel Marshall in 1897; it has been occupied continuously by the Marshall family. In 2008 it will become a part of the Delaware State Park system. The FAHP will own and maintain the steam collection and occupy a museum building and garage on the property, continuing its preservation, interpretation, and outreach activities. It will likely work with the state park staff in developing a plan for the use and interpretation of the Auburn Heights residence. FAHP has 501 (c) (3) not for profit recognition from the Internal Revenue Service. Auburn Heights Preserve is approximately 200 acres of largely open space in the rolling countryside of northern New Castle County, Delaware, near the Pennsylvania state line. In 1997 Mr. Marshall invited a small group of people to learn about the operation of steam automobiles. This grew and became known informally as the Marshall Steam Team. The initial success of the operation attracted attention and interest, with more joining the ranks. The FAHP was formally organized in 2005. It has 200 plus members, with about 60 active volunteers. Several public openings are held each year during which visitors can ride in a steam car, an electric car, on the miniature railroad, and tour the Marshall Museum. Some of the openings include a tour of the Auburn Heights residence. Several more openings are held by reservation for group visits. During most weeks of the year volunteers come to Auburn Heights two nights per week to work on projects that include vehicle maintenance, museum exhibits, railroad maintenance and improvements, and general organization. A management team organizes and oversees the volunteer work projects. FAHP is administered by a 19 member board of directors elected by the membership. In 2006 FAHP hired a Director on a 2/3 time basis and is now ready to expand that to a full-time position. A successful Director will be energetic, self-motivated, and enthusiastic. The individual will enjoy working with people in many settings: board members, volunteers, members, donors, media representatives, community leaders, and so on. This person will need to understand and assure compliance with the requirements for not for profit organizations, as well as providing general oversight of business affairs, and management of the collections. Interested persons should send a cover letter and resume to: Search Committee, Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve, Inc., Box 61, Yorklyn, DE 19736. It is hoped that the Director will be named in late 2007 and assume responsibilities early in 2008.
